Erik L. short rope training

Matt has been guiding on the rivers and in the mountains of central Idaho since 1991. He started working with Sevy Guide Service as a “swamper” on the Middle Fork of the Salmon river and has worked for sixteen consecutive seasons on the Middle Fork and other Idaho rivers.

Matt was licensed as a Technical Mountain Guide with Sawtooth Mountain Guides in 1998 and has worked sporadically guiding introductory classes since then. He trained with and guided for Sun Valley Helicopter Ski Guides as a backcountry ski guide from 2001 through 2005. Matt maintains close relationships with several Idaho outfitters and organizes custom backcountry ski and whitewater rafting trips throughout the year.

Work Experience - Whitewater
1991 - Work as a swamper/camp helper with Sevy Guide Service on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River
1992 - 2003 - Guide full time with Sevy Guide Service on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Includes 2 summers as the sweep boat driver and 5 years as lead guide.
1998 - Present - Guide occasional spring trips on the Bruneau, and Owyhee Rivers.
1993 - Present - Guide the annual Community School 9th Grade Main Salmon (corn creek to carey bar) outdoor program trip.
Work Experience - Climbing
1997 - Attend Sawtooth Mountain Guides two-day in-house guides training program. Obtain Idaho license as a technical mountain and backcountry ski guide.
Summers 1997 - Present - Work occasional 10-day climbing/river combo trip for Sawtooth Mountain Guides.
1998 - Present - Work an occasional climbing weekend trip with the Community School's outdoor program.
Work Experience - Skiing
Winter 2000 - 2005 - Work as a backcountry ski guide with Sun Valley Helicopter Ski Guides. Job responsibilities: Attend morning meetings for avalanche hazard discussion and day planning. Brief guests about the hazards of helicopter flight and backcountry skiing. Prep the helicopter for take-off and landings. Act as the radio dispatch and safety back-up for daily operations. Guide and manage groups of 4 guests in a variety of terrain, avalanche, and weather circumstances.
Training - First Aid
January 1995 - Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) - 180/ 4 week hour course at SOLO facilities in Conway, NH
January 1997 - EMT Refresher in New Hampshire
1997 - Present - Maintain certification of American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED training.
Spring 1997 - Wilderness First Responder (WFR) re-certification course at Galena Lodge, ID. I let my EMT lapse for lack of need.
Spring 1999 - WFR refresher course in Idaho Falls, ID
Spring 2001 - WFR refresher course in Ogden, UT
Winter 2002 - Take the Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) bridge course through Sun Valley Ski Patrol. Get my OEC card.
Winter 2003 - 2005 Continuing education and OEC training through Sun Valley Ski Patrol. Maintain OEC certification.
April 2004 - WFR refresher course through College of Southern Idaho�s Outdoor Program.
Training - Avalanche/Snow Study
Winter 1998 - Avalanche Level I course through Sawtooth Mountain Guides
Winter 1999 - Avalanche Level II course through the American Avalanche Institute
Winter 1999 - 2005 - Present Hands on avalanche study and discussion with Sun Valley Helicopter Ski Guides.
Training - Rivers
Spring 1999 - River rescue course taught by Les Bechdel of Canyons Inc. on the Malad and Snake Rivers.
Spring 2001 - Brought Les Bechdel to Stanley, ID to teach his river rescue course for Sevy Guide Service.
Spring 2002 - Organized and ran an in-house river rescue course for Sevy Guide Service.
Spring 2004 - Organized and taught a 2-day river rescue course for Stanley Search and Rescue in Stanley, ID
