![]() After guiding for seven years on the Middle Fork, studying the canyon's geology for a college thesis, and exploring the numerous tributaries, I began taking photographs of the famous Middle Fork Canyon. It provided a new and exciting perspective of the river, and I enjoyed reliving those beautiful scenes on the light table in my office. After two years of creating many fine images I began to envision a coffee-table style book that would showcase the beauty of the river. I had read every book on the Middle Fork in our river library, but nothing conveyed the spectacular visual experience of running the river. I started talking to clients, friends, and publishers about a potential Middle Fork book project, and began taking photos with such a book in mind. I still sought those beautiful scenic landscape images, but also worked to capture intimate portraits of the river experience ranging from churning creeks and shoreline gravels, to camp scenes and whitewater action. As I stockpiled images I also began to stockpile ideas. How would such a book come together, and what messages should it convey? A partnership with Sun Valley Press provided ideas and experience to refine those initial concepts into a cohesive format. The final results: Impassable Canyon - Journey Down the Middle Fork of the Salmon (Published in December of 2002). I hope you enjoy the finished product. |
