Pistol Creek Sweep Boat

Matt has been working as a river guide on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River since 1991. He is adept at running all types of craft from a hardshell safety kayak, paddleboat, oar boat, to a sweep boat. Matt is licensed on the following Idaho rivers:

  • Middle Fork of the Salmon River (MF1/2) - Lead Boatman
  • South Fork Payette River: Grandjean to Deadwood (PS1)
  • South Fork Payette River: Deadwood to Banks (PS2) - Lead Boatman
  • Main Salmon River: Corn Creek to Spring Bar (SA6)
  • Jarbidge/Brunea Rivers (JB1)
  • Owyhee River

In addition to working as a commercial guide in Idaho, Matt has kayaked or rowed many other rivers outside the state. Listed below is a summary of Matt's Whitewater experience.


Whitewater Experience
Summer 1989 - Learn to roll a kayak in a pool. First whitewater on the Day Stretch & Main Salmon (Class III), first combat roll.
Summer 1991 - Work 7 trips as a swamper/camp helper with Sevy Guide Service on Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon River.
Fall 1991- 2003 - Help organize and guide annual 7-day 9th grade Community School outdoor program trip down the Main Salmon (corn creek to carey bar).
Spring/Summer 1991-2005 - Various kayak day trips on the Main Payette, South Fork Payette (all sections from Grandjean down) North Fork Payette (lower 5), and Murtaugh Canyon on the Snake.
Summers 1992 - 1996 - Guide full time (8-10 trips) for Sevy Guide Service on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Oar raft and paddle raft guiding and safety kayak.
Summers 1997 - 1998 - Guide full time for Sevy Guide Service as the trip sweep boat driver.
Spring 1997 - Row a support raft on a 4-day Bruneau River trip (2000 cfs)
Spring 1998 - Row a cargo boat (guide training trip) on a 4-day Bruneau River Trip (1000 cfs), row a cargo boat (guide training trip) on a 5-day Lower Owyhee Trip.
Spring 1999 - Organize and run an one boat 4-day Lower Owyhee trip.
Fall 1999 - Row a support raft and kayak on a 16-day Grand Canyon (Colorado River 12-20,000 cfs) trip.
Summers 1999-2002 - Guide full time for Sevy Guide Service as the trip lead guide. Oar boat, paddle boat, sweep boat, and safety kayak guiding.
Spring 2000 - Help organize and row a support raft on an 18-day Grand Canyon (Colorado River 8000 cfs) trip.
Fall 2000 - Organized and planned an 8 day self support inflatable kayak trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River (2 people)
Spring 2001 - Guide a 6-day South Fork Owyhee and two 5-day Lower Owyhee trips with Sevy Guide Service, organize and run a 4-day single boat spring Middle Fork trip.
Spring 2002 - Row support raft on a 3-day low water Jarbidge/Bruneau trip (600cfs), Guide a 5-day Lower Owhee trip with Sevy Guide Service, row a support raft on a 5-day spring Middle Fork Trip (5.5 feet)
Fall 2002 - Organize and run a 4-day Hells Canyon of the Snake River trip.
Spring 2003 - Organize and run a 5-day Stillwater Canyon (Green River) to Cataract Canyon (Colorado River) trip. Kayak the Clackamas River (Oregon), Little White Salmon River (Washington), Marble Creek (Idaho) Yaak River (Montana/Idaho) while on a slide show road trip tour.
Summer 2003 - Guide part time (3-5 trips) for Dirk Gibson/Adventure Guides on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Guide a 6-day Main Salmon trip for Canyons Inc.
Spring 2004 - Organize and run a 21-day Grand Canyon (Colorado River 6-16,000 cfs) trip.
Spring 2004 - Guide 3 commercial Middle Fork trips including 1 high water sweep run
Fall 2004 - Organize and run a 4-day Hells Canyon of the Snake River trip.
Spring 2005 - Organize and run a 3-day one-boat Bruneau River trip (1500 cfs)
Summer 2005 - Guide 4 commercial Middle Fork trips including 2 high water sweep runs
Spring 2006 - Row support raft on a private 3-day Marsh/Middle/Main trip (6.8 feet).
Spring 2006 - Guide 3 commercial Middle Fork trips including 1 high water sweep run
